The SPLM is calling on the government of South Sudan to cut down on expenditure and size in order to reduce the revenue gap created by the loss of oil money and keep basic services of health, education and food.

SPLM Secretary General Pagan Amum told the press this evening that the party’s Political Bureau met yesterday and unanimously supported oil shutdown decision.

He said the Political Bureau called on the government to adopt and implement austerity measures to discipline spending in order for the government to continue ensuring health, education and food security to the people.

Mr Amum added that austerity measures were very important to ensure that the limited resources South Sudan has are used correctly through fiscal control, prioritization and efficient delivery of key services.

He stressed that the austerity measures were necessary to minimize the negative impact created by the huge loss of oil money.

He added that the government should rationalize its spending and stop using money on less important projects.

The SPLM Secretary General added that government should reduce size and cut down on its workforce for more effective service delivery.
