A new UN report shows that almost 2,000 communities across Africa have abandoned female genital mutilation last year.

The report prepared by UNFPA, the UN Population Fund, and the UNICEF, UN Children’s Fund, says 8,000 communities have already renounced female genital mutilation.

UNFPA Executive Director Babatunde Osotimehin said the findings show that social norms and cultural practices are changing, and communities are uniting to protect the rights of girls and women.

Dr Osotimehin said the world can abolish female genital mutilation in one generation and help millions of girls and women to live healthier, fuller lives.

Yesterday, the global community observed the International Day of Zero Tolerance to female genital mutilation.
