Twenty four people seriously wounded in a gun battle involving security officers from Mayendit and Rumbek North counties on Wednesday were taken to Rumbek Hospital on Thursday morning for treatment.
Chan Deng Malual, the Medical Director of Rumbek State Hospital, told Good News Radio out of the 24 injured persons brought to the hospital two were taken to Juba for specialized treatment because they were in a serious condition.Peter Lamore, one of the injured officers, said the Rumbek North County Commissioner was accompanied by a patrolling team to a peace meeting with Mayendit County Commissioner over the issue of cattle raiding between the two communities.
He added that during the meeting gun shots abruptly erupted in Mayendit County Commissioner’s compound.
The cattle raiding incident the two county commissioners were discussing about took place last Sunday.
Half the raided cattle have been recovered.
Sources from near Mayendit had told CRN News that the fighting was between the security officers from Mayendit and Tonj East counties and it involved heavy machine guns mounted in picks.
