An African Union high level delegation led by President Pierre Buyoya of Burundi met Monday with South Sudan political parties in Juba yesterday to push for the adoption of an electoral code of conduct.

President Buyoya told the participants that the AU panel convened the summit meeting in response to the request of political parties to assist in their efforts to achieve what is best for southern Sudanese.
He added that the summit’s main objective was to consolidate the foundations for a fair and free campaign and election.
President Salva Kiir Mayardit reiterated his commitment to the code of conduct that will be signed today.
He added that the SPLM will keep it.
Mr. Kiir called upon all the other political parties to be committed to the code of conduct.
The Electoral Code of Conduct has the purpose of making the election campaign a fair and equal contest in order for voters to exercise their free choice.
The Code draws upon the efforts of different Sudanese institutions and parties.
It also reflects the experience of many countries around the world, both those that have long democratic traditions and those which have only recently transitioned from conflict or one party rule to a democratic system.
