The ruling party in South Sudan has taken the lion’s share in the Constitutional Review Commission appointed by the President of the Republic on January 9.
The National Constitutional Review Commission is made of 45 members: nine full time and 36 part-time.
The SPLM has the majority of the seats: four full time and 21 part-time members and the opposition and civil society groups 18: three full time and 15 part-time seats.
NDF, UDF and SANU have full time members while the SPLM-DC, the only party with a parliamentary representation, has only one part-time member. Independent MPs are not represented in the commission.
Civil society and faith-based groups were given a part-time seat each and there are at least ten women in the commission.
The commission is tasked with the revision of the Transitional Constitution in order to draft a permanent Charter.
It should also collect views and suggestions from all the stakeholders including any changes that may need to be introduced to the current system of governance.
