At least one million people started the year under the threat of famine and need food relief in order to stay alive.

The UN said in its South Sudan Weekly Humanitarian Bulletin that the crop production this year is some 400,000 tons short to cover the needs of the country and at least one million people will not have enough food.

Another 3.6 million people could see their livelihood worsened due to food high prices, displacement and insecurity.

The Crop and Food Security Assessment Mission, done in October and November 2011, shows that the agricultural sector was severely affected by conflicts over the past year, worsening food security in South Sudan.

In addition, more than two million heads of cattle have been threatened by endemic disease outbreaks.
