An official from the National High Education Ministry said today that only 44 students out of 300 graduated this year from the first batch of South Sudanese undergraduates who received scholarships from the Egyptian government.

Director General for Training and External Relations Benjamin Gabriel Apai told CRN News that the system used to select the students for the scholarships was not based on merit and too many unqualified students were taken to Egypt.

Mr Gabriel said the students who were already in second and third years in universities in Juba and Khartoum were allowed to compete but they returned to finish their studies back in Sudan because they could meet the standards at Egyptian universities.

Mr Gabriel added that from the 50 undergraduate scholarships granted by South African government only two students managed to continue with their studies.
