Food security situation in South Sudan remains a major concern for the UN and over 2.5 million may need food aid next year.
The UN says crop failure following erratic rains leading to high food prices, insecurity, market disruption from border closures and an increase in demand from returnees and displaced people are the main reasons for the food gap in South Sudan.World Food Programme deputy coordinator in South Sudan Michelle Iseminger told CRN News that the agency needs more than 90 million US dollars to ensure that a quarter of the population get the food it needs.
A Crop and Food Security Assessment Mission done last month found that South Sudan needs an extra 400,000 metric tons of cereals in order to feed its people in 2012.
