The UN food agency has warned that South Sudan is moving towards a severe food crisis due to a harvest that was too short to feed the population.

World Food Programme deputy coordinator in South Sudan, Michelle Iseminger, told CRN News that the food crisis is a gathering storm of hunger approaching the new nation.

She said trade restrictions between South Sudan and Sudan, high prices, insecurity, poor and delayed rains have all contributed to the looming food crisis.

Ms Iseminger said children under three years of age are the most affected group by the food crisis with thousand of them already suffering from acute malnutrition.

Ms Iseminger said WFP needs more than 90 million US dollars to ensure that at least 2.5 million people do not slip into starvation across South Sudan.
