The Abyei community is calling on the government of South Sudan to immediately discontinue the role played by the AU High Implementation Panel led by Thabo Mbeki as mediator in Abyei negotiations, citing failure to find a final solution to Abyei area.

The decision comes after a two-day deliberation by the traditional Ngok Dinka chiefs, community leaders, women, youth, intellectuals and community members from Abyei in Miyom Ngok and Agok town on November 16 and 17.

Kwaja Yai, Chairperson of the Abyei Community, told the press today in Juba that the AU Panel has not been successful in persuading the Khartoum government to end the Abyei problem.

He described it as ineffective in making any achievements.

Mr. Yai said the Abyei community wants the dispute to be resolved in accordance with the CPA and the 2009 ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration.

He said none of the IDPs have returned to Abyei town since its capture in May in fear of SAF’s continued presence.

Mr. Yai blamed some UN and international humanitarian agencies for being too slow in assisting the IDPs.

He said the community appealed to the Republic of South Sudan to allocate within its overall budget, an independent, visible budget for Abyei area and support the return of IDPs to their home villages despite the risk posed by the presence of SAF forces on the ground.
