The Catholic diocese of Torit yesterday opened its annual general meeting in Torit town but adjourned it immediately following the sad news of a diocesan priest’s sudden death.

Fr. Leon, a priest at Loa Catholic Parish, passed out on Tuesday at Mulago Hospital in Kampala, Uganda, Radio Emmanuel reported.

The diocesan annual assembly, however, opened under the theme “Determined and committed to integral Development Amid uncertainty.”

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the diocesan programme manager Fr. Martin Vuni outlined some challenges Catholic Diocese of Torit has faced and he attributed these to return of the people from exile.

Fr. Vuni said that Catholic Diocese of Torit has experienced a negative impact in Health and Education.

He pointed out the number of girl-child dropout rates in schools as a result of to congestion as one of the challenges.

Meanwhile Fr. Vuni observed that the health programme expansion in the diocese is being considered the strongest in the whole of Eastern Equatoria state.

The opening ceremony of the Catholic Diocese of Torit was attended by the incoming care-taker governor of the Eastern Equatoria state, Johnson Juma Okot, among several dignitaries.
