Woman’s rights to inheritance after their husbands die is considered a taboo in some of South Sudan’s traditions but some Juba residents told CRN News that women have the right to inherit like men.

Juma Taban said women should keep all their late husband’s assets because they play a central role in bringing up the children and keeping the family together.

He added that relatives don’t often take care of the widow and her children after the death of her husband.

James Moro said the CPA reserved 25 percent of administration and political palces for women’s affirmative action, a sign that women’s rights should be considered and respected by society.

Lawyer Morris Majok said the Constitution guarantees women the right to inherit property in Article 20, although the principle has not been implemented by the authorities.
