Food security in expect to worsen in South Sudan next year since cereal production was very low this year due to extreme weather conditions, high prices and insecurity.

The alert comes from the findings of the Crop and Food Security Assessment Mission conducted by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Food Programme from 17 October to 4 November.

The findings show that cereal production could fall 40 to 60 per cent.

A portion of the population’s 38 per cent moderately food insecure people are likely to become severely food insecure, thereby requiring increased humanitarian support.

The findings also predict that food prices already very expensive are likely to continue rising in 2012.

Food security is deteriorating in Upper Nile and Greater Bahr el Ghazal states, while Warrap State shows a slight improvement.
