UNMISS, the UN Mission in South Sudan, has denied allegations that it is transporting military equipment and evacuating wounded SPLM-North soldiers from South Kordofan.

SUNA, Sudan’s official news agency, reported that an alleged SPLA officer captured by the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) confessed that the southern army has been transferring weapons and giving logistical support to the SPLM-North.

SUNA reported that captain Hafez Hamza Abkar’s accusations also involved the UN mission in South Sudan.

Siddiquea Aleem, UNMISS spokesman in Juba, strongly denied the allegations.

He told CRN News over the phone that UNMISS’ mandate is to protect civilians in South Sudan and the mission did not conduct any joint military operations with the SPLA.

Mr Aleem added that UNMISS has no legal mandate to operate north of the border.

SUNA also reported that captain Abkar claimed that UNMISS has stopped its flights to Nuba Mountains due to SAF’s increased presence in the region.

Mr Aleem says the allegation is untrue because UNMISS had never conducted any air services in the Sudan.
