The South Sudan Police Service today graduated 18 marines who will patrol the White Nile and other rivers in the country.

Police General Inspector Tito Achuil Madut told CRN News that the training started two weeks ago with only three boats, but the training will continue soon and another three boats are on the way.

He said the marines will patrol the rivers, protect people living in islands and check on goods transported through the waterways.

Mr. Achuil said the new police unit will combat piracy along the White Nile from Nimule to Renk.

In the future, the Marine Police unit will be enlarged to render better services.

Mr. Achuil explained that the marine force is the result of reforming and modernising the police service and bringing in new units.
