Eastern Equatoria state has postponed to Monday the monthly day of peace prayers for elections and referendum in honour of late Father Saturnino Ohure, scheduled to have taken place yesterday.

Eastern Equatoria State government Secretary General, Cyprian Okuye Atar, wrote in a circular letter that prayers for elections and referendum were to be held on the 22nd of every month at Fr. Saturnino’s Mausoleum in Torit, Radio Emmanuel reported.

Mr. Okuye said the state government has directed all county commissioners, religious leaders and civil society to carry similar prayers in their respective areas.

He stressed that the purpose of the prayers is for individuals, Christian families and civil society to reflect on various issues for integral development of human beings and the society in Eastern Equatoria and in South Sudan and the Sudan at large.

Mr. Okuye said the monthly memorial prayers will continue until January 22, 2011.

Fr. Saturlino Ohure, a catholic priest, was one of the founder members of the popular Anyanya One revolution in 1955 in Torit.

He died at the hands of Ugandan soldiers near Kitgum on January 22, 1967.

His remains were transferred home and reburied in a mausoleum on his memory at Torit town centre last year.
