About 150 Deaf people are set to take part in a two-week long training on international sign language and civic voter education that was flagged off today in Juba.

The workshop will have six sessions for 25 people each and takes place at Juba Christian Centre, in Buluk.

Southern Sudan Deaf Development Concern Chairperson, Kachinga Peter Lokica, welcomed the participants using sign language translated by Rose Irene Akun.

Mr. Lokica asked the participants to make the most of the opportunity to learn international sign language to communicate better with each other and to know how to vote.

Alfred Lodiong Wongo, Director for Special Need Education in GoSS Ministry of Education and Technology, praised the programme supported by UNMIS and asked for its extension to other states of Southern Sudan.

Mr. Lodiong urged the participants to learn well in order to train others in sign language and voter education.

The training, financed by the UN’s Quick Impact Project, will cover international sign language, human rights, elections, health, advocacy for the deaf and basic management skills.
