Saif al-Islam, the son of slain Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, is currently in Darfur under the protection of Khalil Ibrahim.

The “Alintibaha” newspaper reported yesterday that Saif entered Sudan crossing from Chad after he left the Libyan city of Sirte on August 27 in a convoy of six armored vehicles.

The newspaper said when the revolutionary forces were closing on Sirte, Gaddafi asked Khalil to protect his family together with large sums of money and gold smuggled from Libya.

The source added that the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) is providing shelter to former regime officials who are wanted by the Libyan authorities.

Earlier reports said Saif was detained in Sirte last Thursday while trying to escape after the killing of his father and his brother Mu’tasim.
