Lakes State physical infrastructure minister is advocating for the decentralization of roads maintenance in order to provide a sense of ownership to the people who use it.

Joseph Maker Madit told Good News Radio that repair works on the Aluakluak-Yirol and Yirol-Shembe roads starts next week.

He said the state took the initiative to do some minimal repairs in local roads because their maintenance falls under the national government.

Mr. Maker said his office is lobbying for a decentralized system of infrastructural development that will see each state in South Sudan charged with the responsibility of maintaining its own roads.

The poor state of the major roads in Lakes State has adversely affected the flow of essential commodities from neighbouring countries, causing a severe shortage of goods with prices skyrocketing beyond the means of most people.
