Aids is on the increase in Yei and over 1,570 people are being treated with antiretroviral medicines.
Monitoring and Evaluation officer Joyce Sadiya Clement told Easter Radio that the high prevalence of aids in Yei is attributed to its proximity to the border, the number of sex workers operating in town and consumption of drugs.Ms. Sadiya said 1,571 people are being treated for the disease.
Thirty eight have already died of aids related causes since the antiretroviral centre opened.
The officer said her office is working with NGOs and community based organizations in awareness and behaviour change programs to curb the prevalence of aids in Yei.
Ms. Sadiya appealed to the residents of the county to know their HIV status through testing and go for treatment instead of crossing the border.
She explained that the antiretroviral drugs are very expensive and expire if not used.
