FLOODS AFFECT OVER 800 FAMILIES IN TORIT

Heavy rains last night flooded large areas of Torit Town, in Eastern Equatoria, affecting over 800 families.

Several houses were flood and destroyed and crops ruined in areas along the Ilangi stream, Hai Kuku residential area and other places in the town.

Former governor Aloisio Emor Ojetuk was among the people affected by the floods. He told Emmanuel Radio that it was the first time Ilangi stream turned so destructive since he came to the area last year.

He said that two heavy showers followed by a storm destroyed crops ready for harvesting.

He added that the flood may bring hunger to the area.

State minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management Benjamin Benaiah Kitara called for patience saying the government is making efforts to assist the affected families.

He added that he was in the field assessing the levels of damage on crops, houses and persons.

Mr. Benaiah said a similar disaster happened in Greater Kapoeta.

He added that the government will find a solution to make people feel secure.

The roof of the office for the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration Commission also suffered some damagesand many documents were dried in the sun.
