Church personnel have been encouraged to take the Gospel to the cattle camps as a means of building sustainable peace in South Sudan.

This message was voiced by different speakers during the celebration of the International World Peace Day at Rumbek’s Freedom Square on Wednesday, Good News Radio reported.

MP Dhieu Wal Takpiny speaking on the speaker’s behalf urged the Church personnel to evangelize the rural populations including those in the cattle camps.

He said the youth play a role in maintaining peace in the community, encouraging literate youths to spearhead reconciliation initiatives especially in the rural areas.

Mr. Wal added that the current peaceful situation is being maintained by the armed forces, but it cannot guarantee peace in the long term.

Advisor on Gender Adak Costa Mapuor was representing the government of Lakes State. She said peace allows basic services including basic education, health and the provision of water to reach rural areas.

She added that the ongoing disarmament exercise in Lakes State is part of a national drive to have sustainable peace.

Lakes State witnessed atrocious episodes of inter-communal vengeful conflicts during the months leading to independence, with women and children bearing the brunt of it.
