The use of dangerous drugs such as hashish and alcohol has been singled out as the major cause for the high rate of mental illnesses among the population in Yei River County.

Community Awareness for Psycho-Socio and Economic Development program coordinator Manikese Kolere told Easter Radio yesterday that the youth are greatly affected by drugs abuse.

He said the youths have been affected by strong alcoholic drinks from Uganda, chewing mairungi and smoking hashish that they call opium.

Mr. Kolere said his organization is working hard with the community leaders to sensitize people about the effects of toxic substances on their health.

He added that they also counsel youngsters about the dangers of using drugs and their effects.

Mr. Kolere appealed to parents to identify children with mental disturbances and other psycho-social problems and refer them to his office for treatment.
