The President of the Sudan has issued a decree releasing 85 women from South Sudan held in prisons in Khartoum for brewing alcoholic drinks.

Omar Al-Bashir’s decision came in response to President Salva Kiir Mayardit’s letter asking him to release all South Sudanese detained in the Sudan.

Government spokesperson Barnaba Marial Benjamin said President Al-Bashir responded positively to Mr. Kiir’s request by setting free all Southerners in prison including the 85 women.

Dr. Marial added that Mr. AL-Bashir wrote to Mr. Kiir proposing that the ministers of interior and justice from both countries came together to work out plans to transfer prisoners condemned for murder and theft.

Dr. Marial added that the minister for Gender, Child and Social Welfare, Agnes Lasuba, was mandated to discuss the transfer of about 200,000 South Sudanese streets children in the Sudan.
