A senior SPLM official has accused the Khartoum government of continuously harassing and mistreating South Sudanese citizens returning home and called upon the international community to intervene and arrest the worrying situation.
SPLM spokesperson Yien Matthew Chol told the press today in Juba that 18 Sudanese drivers bringing South Sudanese home are being held in custody by the authorities in White Nile State for no reason.Mr. Yien also accused Khartoum of supporting the Arab Misseriya tribesmen that carried out a deadly attack against a train transporting South Sudanese last June.
He called on the international community to intervene, especially the UN and the AU.
He said the UN should investigate the episodes of harassment against returnees.
Mr. Yien also called upon the National Assembly to address the issue and come up with a clear position to help Southerners’ returning home.
He asked the government to form a committee to investigate the situation of Southerners returning from the Sudan.
Juba and Khartoum governments agreed to give South Sudanese nine months for repatriation from the Sudan after the declaration of independence.
However, the South Sudanese living in the Sudan are reportedly being harassed by both the civil population and law enforcers.
