A German Catholic Charity group has promised to continue assisting development projects of the Catholic Diocese of Torit in Eastern Equatoria.

Josef Sayer, the director of Misereor, a development organization of the German Bishops’ Conference, made the pledge on Sunday during the celebration of the Assumption of Our Lady in Torit, Emmanuel Radio reported.

He said the Church in Germany helped South Sudan during the two decades of civil war and it will continue assisting in the struggle to develop the new nation.

Fr. Sayer said Misereor also lobbies the German Government and Parliament and the European Union on behalf of the people of South Sudan and their needs.

Fr. Sayer said he visited Torit twice in the past decade.

He recalled his previous trip with Bishop Paride to meet Christians in their villages.

He said he visited a village the day after it was destroyed by a bomb.

He explained that the experience of seeing a government destroying its own people was very disturbing.

Torit Vicar General Celestino Muras says Misereor supports the diocese in health, water, education and vocational training sectors.
