The ministry of foreign affairs and the UN signed today an agreement that will guide the activities of the UN Mission in South Sudan known as UNMISS.

Hilde Johnson, who heads UNMISS, said the Status of Forces Agreement provides the key legal framework for the mission’s operations in the republic.

She noted that UNMISS is a new mission with a new mandate and a new approach entitled to serve South Sudan.

Ms. Johnson said the agreement commits the government of South Sudan and UNMISS to a number of issues like implementing the UN Convention on the Privileges and Immunity for UN workers.

She added that the agreement also commits UNMISS to be impartial while fulfilling its mandate.

The agreement also makes sure that the UN workers respect the laws and regulations of South Sudan.

Foreign minister Deng Alor pledged his government’s commitment to implement the agreement.

He added that the agreement is also important for the people of South Sudan.

Mr. Alor called upon all institutions in South Sudan to cooperate with UNMISS.
