The annual gathering of Church personnel in Rumbek Diocese was officially opened last evening by its bishop.

Bishop Caesar Mazzolari told the participants that the twelfth annual assembly brings together the Church personnel from all the 15 major centres and the different departments of the diocese such as pastoral, education, health, and administration, Radio Good News reported.

Bishop Mazzolari thanked the Lord for the achievements of the diocese so far, underlining the opening up of two radio stations in the last two weeks and the “magnificent” church built in Yirol.

However, the bishop noted some challenges, like the rising of the Reformed Catholic Church in Marial Lou Mission.

The assembly participants said they expect to strengthen the spirit of belonging and collaboration.

They also expressed the need of civic education for the ordinary people in view of April elections and next year’s referendum.

Bishop Edward Hiboro of Tambura Yambio diocese will give a talk on the Second Synod of Africa while Elizabeth Nyanhut, in charge of the Sudan Catholic Bishops Conference Women Desk, will speak on the promotion of women.

Other speakers will include government officials on matters of civic education, justice and peace.

HIV and Aids will also be addressed during the 10-day assembly.
