An opposition leader in the national assembly strongly criticised the formation of the Council of States, accusing the SPLM of ignoring the resolutions from last October’s all parties conference that paved the way for the referendum.

Minority leader Onyoti Adigo Nyikwec said the conference agreed on power sharing.

The SPLM-DC member added that since all the members were appointed by the President of the Republic, they will work as he asks them without any real sharing of power.

President Kiir issued a presidential decree for the transformation and reconstitution of the National Legislative Assembly.

The House has a total of 332 members with 170 coming from the former SSLA, 96 from the National Assembly in Khartoum and 66 appointed by the President of the Republic under the Transitional Constitution.

Mr. Adigo said the new assembly is too big and it will create a gap in service delivery since most of the money will go for the salaries of the 332 MPs.

The Council of States comprises of 45 SPLM members and five from the opposition.
