South Sudan unveiled today its first exhibition centre to honour martyrs who died during the civil wars and the weapons used to liberate the country.

Assembled in a white tent, the exhibition centre displays mostly late John Garang’s photos during the war and his personnel belongings.

SPLM official Bol Makweng and the exhibition organiser said Garang’s personnel belonging like toothbrushes, watches and clothes are displayed in a wardrobe so that the coming generations can see them.

The other part of the centre shows photos of almost 200 martyrs and the symbols of the 25 battalions that fought the civil war with Sudan.

Displayed on the ground are hundreds of traditional crafts including pots, bags, spears and bows.

Mr. Bol showed visitors ancient and modern weapons used during the struggle together with some communications technology and SPLM historic documents.

SPLM staff Sophia Palgai called upon the families who have pictures of their martyrs to hand them to SPLM information sector so that they can be included in the exhibit.

Caretaker minister of interior Gier Chuang Aluong, who was a commander during the war, said the exhibition is a yawn for real freedom where service delivery must be a priority.

The exhibition also shows a video explaining various stages of the liberation with leaders that directed each struggle at every stage.

Bol said the government will soon build a permanent museum to maintain all the items in display.

The current exhibition will be on display until November.
