Torit is running out of sugar as commodity prices rise higher in the market.

Trading stores and retailer shops run out of sugar, Emmanuel Radio reported.

Other commodities are in short supply and the cost of living bites hard in Torit.

Several traders said the situation follows economic restrictions imposed by the Sudan against the Republic of South Sudan.

Traders blame high border taxes levied by Khartoum authorities on goods coming into South Sudan as an obstructing factor for importation of essential goods including sugar.

Mary Juwa, who operates a business at Torit food market, says that general rise in prices across East Africa states is one of the factors contributing to scarcity of commodities and high cost of living in South Sudan.

Eastern Equatoria state deputy governor Nartisio Manir Loluke announced that the government is working hard to ensure the prices go down by reducing tax rates on food items.

Mr. Manir said the responsibility of lowering food prices and building the new nation lies with every citizen by taking up agricultural activities to produce more food.
