South Sudan MPs confirmed today the appointment of a new auditor general for southern Sudan Audit Chamber after two years without a financial management watchdog.
GoSS President Salva Kiir Mayadrit removed the former Auditor General Barnabas Majok Barnabas as well as other members of the Audit chamber in 2007 after the assembly passed a vote of no confident in the team under charges of embezzlement of public funds and failure to audit government accounts.
Acting speaker Jimmy Wongo read out the presidential decree appointing Stephen Kiliona Woundu as the new auditor general to the members of Parliament.
Mr. Wongo noted that Mr. Woundo understands the importance of making public institutions accountable for the management of resources.
He added he was appointed based on his academic qualifications and his competence.
Mr Woundo is currently serving as Sudanese ambassador to Japan.
He was the auditor general during the SPLM’s struggle for liberation.
