OVER 2800 CANDIDATES RUNNING FOR NATIONAL AND SOUTHERN SUDAN ASSEMBLIES

At least 2879 candidates have registered to run for a seat either in the National Assembly or in Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly.

The applicants compete for 620 places: 450 in Khartoum and 170 in Juba, which gives a ratio of over four contestants per one seat.

The different parties filed1958 candidates for the national parliament and 396 for Southern Sudan Assembly.

Another 418 independent candidates are contesting for a seat in the Khartoum assembly while 107 presented nominations for the parliament in the South.

The race for governor will be a very tight contest. 196 candidates will dispute just 25 state posts: 145 in party lists and 51 as independents.

For the presidency, so far there are ten candidates contesting for the top job in the nation while two men will dispute the presidency of Southern Sudan: Salva Kiir Mayardit for the SPLM and his rival Lam Akol for the SPLM-DC.
