A rights activist praised the South Sudan Legislative Assembly for including the right of the accused in the Transitional Constitution.
The South Sudan Human Rights Society for Advocacy (SSHURA) submitted petitions to the Legislative Assembly requesting the inclusion of fair trial, rights of the accused and rights of persons with disabilities before the Charta was passed.Speaking to Bakhita radio, Biel Boutros Biel who is SSHURA’s Executive Director said the right will give a voice to the people accused in court.
He added that the accused can now only stay in detention for 28 hours before being charged.
Mr. Biel vowed to work closely with the National Legislative Assembly to advocate for the rights of the citizens.
He called on the government of Republic of South Sudan to honor democracy, respect for human rights, rule of law, freedom of speech and principles that promote good governance.
