The National Elections Commission (NEC) has urged journalists in South Sudan to uphold accuracy, fairness and professionalism in their reporting as the country prepares for the upcoming general elections.

George Lemi, the NEC Commissioner in charge of Media and Communication, made the call on Monday during the closing session of a half-day media engagement on voter and civic education held at the Commission’s offices.

Lemi described the media as a strategic partner in the electoral process, emphasizing its role in informing citizens, promoting voter education, and ensuring the public receives accurate information about elections.

“The media is not merely a reporter of elections. You are our strongest strategic partner in informing, educating, and connecting citizens with the electoral process,” Lemi said.

He called for sustained cooperation between the Commission and media houses before, during and after the elections, stressing that effective communication and public access to reliable information are essential to an informed electorate.

Lemi said the NEC was committed to providing timely and accurate information, maintaining open communication with journalists and facilitating access to electoral information.

In return, he urged journalists to exercise responsibility when reporting on sensitive electoral issues, noting the importance of accuracy, fairness and professionalism in public communication.

The engagement was part of the Commission’s efforts to strengthen cooperation with journalists on voter and civic education as preparations for the elections continue.

The workshop brought together journalists from different media houses in Juba to discuss the NEC’s legal framework, the National Elections Act, as amended in 2026, progress in electoral preparations and the media’s role in informing the public.

The Commission’s appeal comes as public access to credible electoral information remains important for enabling citizens to make informed decisions and participate in the electoral process.
