The Republic of South Sudan has received the number 211 as its telephone country code as yet another symbol of independence.

Director General in the Telecommunication Ministry Elijah Biar Koul told SCR News this morning in Juba that the world’s newest republic was issued a dialling code by International Telecommunication Union a day before the UN welcomed South Sudan to community of the nations.

Mr. Biar said global network operators were told to reprogram their systems and embed plus 211 as South Sudan’s country code.

He added that the switching process from 239 to 211 will take three to five months to finish.

South Sudan’s mobile operators need to produce new Sim and airtime cards and rchange their units from Sudanese to South Sudan Pound.

Mr. Biar said mobile operators Zain and MTN have already separated their networks from Sudan.

Sudani is expected to do the same soon.
