The chief of the new UN Mission in South Sudan called UNMISSS said it will help the government to consolidate peace and stability in the new republic.
Hilde F. Johnson told journalists this morning in Juba that UNMISS mandate will support the government to stabilize and ensure peace and security in South Sudan.She said the mission will support the government in state building process with its strong peace and security elements, rule of law and human rights.
Ms. Johnson explained that human rights for children, women and for IDPs and refugees has been highlighted by the UN Security Council mandate.
She said the mission has a strong mandate to intervene militarily to protect civilians in case the government failed to do so.
The UN Mission in South Sudan will be made up of 7,000 military and 900 police.
