Leaders representing five communities in Tonj South County have agreed that no gold mining activities will begin in Guandur Forest until the mining company fulfills all legal and regulatory requirements with the Warrap State Government.
The resolution followed a consultative meeting at the Tonj South County Commissioner’s residence, bringing together paramount chiefs, executive chiefs, elders, youth representatives, and county officials.
The meeting came after widespread speculation on social media alleging that Marathon Petroleum Limited had started preparations for gold exploration without obtaining the required approvals or consulting all affected communities.
Participants dismissed the reports, saying no mining activities have commenced and that the company is still processing legal documentation with the state government.
Tonj South County Commissioner Gordon Makuer Tiau said all stakeholders had agreed that the company must first complete the legal approval process before any discussions on compensation, employment, or community development benefits can begin.
Bongo Community Chairperson in Juba, Michael Danguru, also dismissed claims that mining operations had started.
He explained that the company’s Chief Executive Officer is receiving medical treatment in Kenya and will complete the remaining approval process upon his return.
Danguru appealed to residents to remain calm, avoid spreading misinformation, and preserve peace and unity among the five communities.
He emphasized that the meeting helped clarify the project’s current status and reaffirmed that no mining activities will take place until all legal requirements are fulfilled.
