Digital South Sudan Telecommunications Company has organized a marathon in Juba as part of activities marking South Sudan’s 15th Independence Anniversary.

The event attracted athletes, cyclists, government officials, and members of the public in a celebration of unity and patriotism.

Top performers received cash prizes, with the winner taking home two-and-a-half million South Sudanese Pounds. Second and third place winners received two million and one million pounds respectively, while participants who finished among the top ten each received three hundred thousand pounds.

Speaking during the ceremony, Digital South Sudan Executive Vice President De Chaa Awuol said the marathon symbolized South Sudan’s long journey to freedom and nationhood.

He urged citizens to demonstrate the same determination used during the liberation struggle in building a peaceful and prosperous country.

Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning Thok Turuk Thok encouraged South Sudanese, especially young people, to remain hopeful and actively contribute to the country’s development.

He reminded citizens that independence came through great sacrifice and said building the nation is the responsibility of every South Sudanese.

Minister of Culture, Museums and National Heritage Sarah Nyonath Elijah commended participants for demonstrating resilience, patriotism, and commitment to national unity during the celebrations.

The minister also praised Digital South Sudan for promoting social cohesion through sports. She singled out Angel Mercy, a young girl who completed the marathon barefoot, describing her determination as an inspiration to the nation.
