The blood bank at Torit State Hospital is facing a critical blood shortage, putting patients who require urgent transfusions at serious risk.
Speaking to Radio Emmanuel 89 FM, Blood Bank Manager Obulejo James said the facility has almost exhausted its blood supply, with only one unit of A-positive blood, one unit of B blood, and 250 milliliters of AB blood remaining. He attributed the shortage to the low number of voluntary blood donors and appealed to the public to donate blood to help save lives.
A mother, Christine Sunday Lawrence, recounted the struggle she faced while searching for a blood donor for her critically ill daughter. She said hours of searching yielded no results until the child’s father donated blood, which, combined with the little blood available at the bank, helped save the girl’s life.
Voluntary blood donors in Torit urged residents to reject myths and misconceptions surrounding blood donation, stressing that donating blood is safe and remains one of the most effective ways to save lives.
