The Ministry of Labour, in collaboration with employers’ associations and workers’ trade unions, has announced that the Republic of South Sudan will join the global community in commemorating International Labour Day on May 1, 2026, with a national event to be held at Juba National Stadium.
Observed annually worldwide, International Labour Day recognizes the achievements, rights, and contributions of workers. This year’s celebration in South Sudan will be held under the theme, “Empowering Workers, Developing South Sudan.”
Speaking during a press conference on Tuesday, April 29, 2026, the National Minister of Labour, Anthony Lino Makana, said preparations for the event followed a high-level endorsement by the Service Cluster Meeting held on April 21, 2026. The meeting was chaired by Vice President Hussein Abdelbagi Akol, who oversees the Service Cluster, and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring a successful and inclusive celebration.
Makana noted that this year’s commemoration is historically significant, marking the country’s inaugural national celebration of International Labour Day since independence. The event is expected to bring together workers, employers, and government institutions from across the country.
The program will feature keynote addresses, including remarks by President Salva Kiir Mayardit, alongside other national leaders and stakeholders. Activities will include exhibitions and displays by workers, institutions, and enterprises, as well as cultural performances highlighting South Sudan’s rich heritage.
In addition, the Minister revealed that the event will incorporate practical career support initiatives such as CV clinics aimed at equipping job seekers with skills to improve their employability.
“One of the challenges among graduates is the lack of proper training in writing competitive CVs,” Makana said. “Just as one dresses appropriately for an important occasion, a CV must be well-organized and presentable to stand out.”
He added that employers attending the event will also have the opportunity to engage directly with job seekers and make commitments toward employment opportunities.
The Ministry has called on the general public, stakeholders, and development partners to participate in the celebration, describing it as a milestone in promoting workers’ empowerment and national development.
