ELDERS CONGRATULATE SOUTH SUDAN AHEAD OF INDEPENDENCE

A group of former statespersons sent a letter congratulating President Salva Kiir Mayardit for South Sudan’ independence.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu conveyed the message from the Elders to the people the Republic of South Sudan.

The Elders urged the government of South Sudan to maintain good relations between Juba and Khartoum.

They said they were deeply troubled by the ongoing conflict, internal displacement and killing of civilians in Abyei and Southern Kordofan.

They urged the government of President Kiir to adopt an inclusive and participatory approach to governance.

The said opposition parties, civil society representatives and all regions have a meaningful role to play in the South Sudan’s transition.

They added that marginalization would harm the prospects for democracy and lasting peace and stability.

The Elders is a group of 12 global leaders formed in 2007 by Nelson Mandela. They support peace building, help address major causes of human suffering and promote shared interests of humanity.
