The Association for Media Development in South Sudan has convened its 23rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Juba, bringing together media professionals and stakeholders to reflect on progress and shape the future of the media sector.

The two-day meeting, which concludes on Friday, March 27, 2026, is expected to culminate in the election of new executive board members who will steer the organization for the next two years.

AMDISS Executive Director Irene Aya commended the outgoing board for its dedication and strategic guidance during a period marked by significant challenges.

“We all know that the media environment in South Sudan is full of emergencies and crises. We at the secretariat could not handle it alone,” Aya said. “The executive board has mentored us and provided advice that has enabled AMDISS to move forward despite difficult conditions, including funding constraints.”

Aya revealed that AMDISS has lost nearly 80 percent of its funding, previously supported by the United States Agency for International Development. Despite this setback, she acknowledged the continued support of partners, including Norwegian Church Aid for providing office space and Norwegian People’s Aid for financial assistance.

She also highlighted the contributions of IFEX and Reporters Without Borders, noting their role in strengthening global engagement and supporting journalists with essential equipment.

Despite the financial strain, Aya praised the resilience of AMDISS staff and assured members that the upcoming elections will be conducted under legal supervision to guarantee a free and fair process.

Deputy Chairperson Chris Marol described the AGM as taking place at a “critical juncture” for both the organization and the broader media landscape.

“As a board, we have the responsibility to shape policy and strengthen the media in South Sudan,” Marol said. “This is an opportunity for members to share ideas and find sustainable solutions.”

Representing Norwegian Church Aid, Deputy Director Michael Oluwuko praised AMDISS for its impact on media development and capacity building.

He urged members to explore alternative funding strategies in light of declining global donor support and called on journalists to uphold professional ethics, particularly as the country prepares for upcoming elections.

The AGM is expected to play a key role in defining AMDISS’s direction, with the election of new board members set to guide the organization through the next phase of its work.
