The Government of South Sudan has renewed its call for an immediate cessation of hostilities, urging the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army in Opposition (SPLM/A-IO) to recommit to peace and fully uphold the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCISS).

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, the Minister of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services and official government spokesperson, Hon. Ateny Wek Ateny, warned that continued fighting threatens national stability and undermines the country’s fragile peace process.

“The Government calls upon the SPLM/A-IO to immediately cease hostilities and strictly adhere to both the letter and spirit of the R-ARCISS,” Ateny said. “Any actions that undermine the Agreement pose a serious threat to peace and jeopardize the ongoing transitional process.”

The minister said government forces had responded to what he described as rebel offensives in parts of Greater Jonglei, preventing further escalation and protecting civilians from harm.

He commended the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) for what he termed a swift and professional response in carrying out their constitutional duty to safeguard the country.

Ateny reiterated that the government remains firmly committed to the full implementation of the R-ARCISS, describing the peace agreement as the foundation for lasting security, stability, and national unity.

He also reassured residents of Akobo, Nyirol, and Uror counties who fled to United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) protection sites that the security situation is under control and that their safety is guaranteed.

“The Government fully assures citizens of their protection and safety,” he said, adding that authorities will continue to work closely with UNMISS and other UN partners in delivering peace and humanitarian assistance in Jonglei State.

According to the minister, the ongoing security operations in northern Jonglei are lawful measures aimed at restoring public order and preventing armed groups from destabilizing communities.

“These operations are not directed at innocent civilians, but at armed elements that threaten peace and stability,” he emphasized.

Concluding his remarks, Ateny reaffirmed the government’s commitment to peace, dialogue, and the protection of all South Sudanese, calling on all parties to exercise restraint and prioritize national unity in the interest of lasting peace.
