More than 20 farmlands have been burned to ashes in Lafon County, Eastern Equatoria State, following a fire incident reported in early January 2026.

Speaking to Radio Emmanuel in a phone interview, Hon. Urupi David Uywek, the Commissioner of Lafon County, said the fire destroyed 23 farms in Burgilo, Marguna, and Kurumi Payams. He said the fire was allegedly started by a 12-year-old boy identified as Ojuba Obor on January 3, 2026.

“Unfortunately, the fire burned about 23 farmlands with good harvests and enough grains, leaving over 100 households facing hunger,” Commissioner Urupi said.

According to the commissioner, the incident has put many families at risk of food insecurity this year.

Urupi said the matter was immediately reported to the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) for assessment and intervention.

“When we received the report, we contacted the RRC county secretary and sent an assessment team. The findings were forwarded to the state RRC secretariat,” he explained.

He noted that Borhilong, Marguna, and Kunyu Payams were among the worst affected areas.

The commissioner commended the Lafon community for remaining calm and showing understanding toward the teenage boy involved.

“The community did not react negatively because they considered the boy innocent. People are calm and hopeful that the government and humanitarian partners will support those affected,” Urupi said.

He appealed to humanitarian organizations to visit the affected areas and assist vulnerable families, while urging communities to remain patient as the government works to address the situation.

The Lafon County Commissioner made the remarks during a phone interview with Radio Emmanuel 89 FM on Thursday.
