Traffic police in Eastern Equatoria State have confirmed that two people died and seven others sustained injuries in road accidents during the festive season.
Colonel Longar Peter John, the Acting Director of Traffic Police in the state, said one fatal accident occurred in Nimule on December 24, 2025, while another accident along the Torit–New Kenya–Hiyala road on January 2, 2026, claimed one life and injured six others.
Colonel Longar attributed all the accidents to alcohol consumption and reckless driving.
“On December 24th, there was an accident in Nimule that resulted in one death. On December 25th in Torit, a motorbike knocked down a young child near the airport, causing a leg fracture. On January 2nd, a vehicle overturned near Hiyala on the Kapoeta road, killing one youth and injuring six others.”
The Acting Director blamed drivers and motorbike riders for violating traffic laws.
“Most accidents are caused by negligence, overspeeding, and failure to respect traffic laws. Drivers know they are in control of the road, but still choose to drive at high speed. If everyone complied with traffic laws, accidents would be greatly reduced.”
Colonel Longar also warned pharmacy owners against selling harmful drugs to motorbike riders and drivers.
“We have discovered that some riders are consuming drugs bought from clinics to make themselves intoxicated. Pharmacy owners should stop selling such drugs to the youth. This practice is destroying young people and contributing to accidents, especially in Torit and Nimule.”
The remarks were made during an exclusive interview with Radio Emmanuel 89 FM in Torit on Tuesday.
