The United Kingdom’s Ambassador to South Sudan, H.E. David Ashley, arrived in Rumbek on Tuesday morning for a working visit to assess key UK-supported projects in health, education, and peacebuilding across Lakes State.
The Ambassador and his delegation were warmly welcomed at Rumbek Airport by senior state officials, community peace groups, and international development partners. Leading the reception was the State Minister of Cabinet Affairs, Hon. Stephen Mathiang Deng, who expressed deep appreciation for the UK’s continued support in promoting peace and development.
“We thank the British government for standing with the people of Lakes State. Their support in peacebuilding and basic services has made a real impact,” said Hon. Mathiang.
Ambassador Ashley stated that the purpose of his visit was to evaluate ongoing projects and engage with local communities to better understand their needs.
“We want to see a peaceful, thriving South Sudan. Our visit here is to listen, learn, and strengthen the work we are already doing together,” he said.
Mary Arun Gol, State Area Coordinator for Peace Canal, emphasized that the visit is key to reviewing progress, identifying gaps, and guiding future support. The delegation is expected to tour a peace farm and cattle camps, where local peacebuilding activities are being implemented to reduce conflict and promote community resilience.
“This is an opportunity to reflect on what’s working and where we can do better. The UK’s presence here boosts our confidence and commitment,” Mary noted.
Local resident Deborah Abiliu welcomed the Ambassador’s visit and used the opportunity to call for more support in healthcare and food security.
“We need better health services and support to grow enough food. The UK’s help has been valuable, but more is still needed,” she said.
As part of his itinerary, Ambassador Ashley is expected to explore the expansion of Peace Canal activities into Cueibet County, aiming to strengthen peace and coexistence among neighboring communities through inclusive dialogue and development programs.
