South Sudan Officially Opens Embassy in Tokyo, Japan

The Republic of South Sudan has officially opened its Embassy in Tokyo, Japan, marking a historic milestone in the country’s diplomatic relations with Japan.

The inauguration ceremony took place on August 23, 2025, and was led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Monday Semaya K. Kumba. The event was attended by senior Japanese officials and members of the diplomatic corps.

Notable guests included Ambassador Tadayuki Miyashita, Chief of Protocol at Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Ambassador Horiuchi Toshihiko, Assistant Minister and Director General for African Affairs; Ambassador Alryiha Hydoub of the Republic of the Sudan; and representatives from the Embassy of the United Republic of Tanzania.

In his speech, Minister Monday expressed gratitude to the Government and people of Japan for their hospitality and long-standing support. He commended Ambassador Victoria Samuel Aru and her team for their commitment to maintaining the embassy, urging them to continue promoting South Sudan’s diplomatic presence in Japan.

The Minister also highlighted key discussions held during the recent TICAD9 conference in Yokohama, including meetings with Japanese leadership, the Mayor of Yokohama, Toyota Tsusho, JICA, the Nippon Foundation, and other institutions. He noted that these engagements are expected to enhance future cooperation.

For her part, Ambassador Victoria Samuel Aru reaffirmed her dedication to strengthening ties between South Sudan and Japan. She acknowledged Japan’s continued partnership and support since South Sudan’s independence.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador Horiuchi Toshihiko praised Ambassador Aru for her efforts and welcomed Minister Monday’s participation in TICAD9, reaffirming Japan’s commitment to deepening its bilateral relationship with South Sudan.

With this official opening, the Embassy of South Sudan in Tokyo stands as a symbol of friendship and shared vision for stronger collaboration between the two nations.
