President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Monday reaffirmed his government’s commitment to fully implementing the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS) during a high-level meeting with a delegation from the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) in Juba.

The talks focused on the status of the peace process, preparations for South Sudan’s first post-conflict elections in December 2026, and strategies for strengthening cooperation between South Sudan and the African Union (AU) in achieving long-term peace and stability.

“President Kiir restated his unwavering commitment to peace and emphasized the importance of continued collaboration with the African Union to ensure successful implementation of the peace agreement,” said Foreign Affairs Minister Monday Semaya Kumba following the meeting.

The AU delegation was led by Dr. Mohammed Khaled, Algeria’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and current Chair of the AU Peace and Security Council. He noted that the visit aimed to evaluate South Sudan’s progress in implementing the peace roadmap and to identify ways the AU can provide further support, particularly in the run-up to the 2026 elections.

“Our mission is to assess the peace environment and support the government and people of South Sudan in advancing stability and democratic governance,” Dr. Khaled said.

The meeting marked a significant moment in regional diplomacy, reaffirming the AU’s role as a key partner in South Sudan’s transition from conflict to peace. It also signaled renewed momentum in regional and international efforts to keep the peace process on track.

As South Sudan prepares for a critical phase in its political journey, the AU’s support is expected to be instrumental in facilitating electoral readiness, strengthening institutions, and ensuring inclusivity in the peace process.
