Judges at the International Criminal Court this afternoon allowed the prosecutor to press charges of genocide against the President of the Republic for his role in the five-year Darfur conflict.

Last year, President Omar Hassan al Bashir Al-Bashir was indicted by the ICC over war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Darfur.

ICC Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo had included three counts of genocide on his original arrest warrant for Mr. al-Bashir, but the pre-trial judges left it off.

Mr. Moreno-Ocampo appealed in July against the pre-trial judges ruling.

Now the court of appeal ruled in favour of Mr. Moreno-Ocampo.

However, the judges did not rule that Mr. al-Bashir should be charged with genocide.

They said it will be up to the pre-trial chamber to determine whether to add the charge to the warrant.

ICC prosecutors say Mr. al-Bashir intended to destroy the Fur, Masalit and Zaghawa peoples in Darfur.
